Lactation Services at PHCA

Breastfeeding is a meaningful and rewarding experience, but it can also present challenges along the way. At Pediatric Health Care Associates, we are proud to offer comprehensive lactation support that combines compassionate care with clinical expertise. Our services are led by Marie McDermott, Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), providing families with an elevated level of medical insight alongside personalized breastfeeding support.

  • Education on breastfeeding warning signs and when to contact your healthcare provider
  • Positioning techniques to promote effective feeding
  • Evaluation and management of newborn feeding difficulties
  • Prevention and treatment of nipple soreness

Even when breastfeeding is going well, a consultation can help optimize feeding techniques and provide reassurance.

What Makes Us Different

Our lactation services are uniquely integrated within your child’s primary care. In addition to receiving expert lactation guidance, your baby continues to be supported by their primary care provider and care team. This approach allows us to:

  • Diagnosing and managing medical concerns of your child during your visit
  • Evaluate and address complex issues such as slow weight gain and other newborn health concerns
  • Monitor your baby’s growth and development alongside feeding progress

This coordinated model ensures comprehensive, efficient care in one visit.

What to Expect: Your First Visit

Your initial lactation consultation is a 60-minute appointment designed to thoroughly assess both mother and baby. During this visit, you can expect:

  • A detailed feeding history
  • Infant weight checks (including pre- and post-feeding measurements, if indicated)
  • Observation of a feeding session
  • Hands-on assistance with latch and positioning
  • Evaluation of maternal and infant factors that may impact feeding
  • Development of a personalized care plan for home

Follow-up visits may be recommended based on your individual needs.
